Natchitoches Shopping Guide: Local Shops and Historic Streets

Shopping in Natchitoches is a wonderful way to experience our community. The Historic District is filled with locally owned boutiques, art galleries, antique stores, specialty shops and Louisiana gifts.

Most downtown shops can be explored on foot. Begin at either end of Front Street, follow the route in either direction and use your phone for directions from your current location.

Choose Where to Begin

The walkable shopping district extends between two convenient starting points:

Southern starting point: Corner of Rue Touline and Front Street

Northern starting point: Corner of Rue Lafayette and Front Street

Queen Anne guests will generally find the Rue Touline end convenient. Violet Hill guests will generally find the Rue Lafayette end convenient. Guests staying at Judge Porter House or Andrew Morris House may begin at either end or enter from Church Street, Rue St. Denis or Rue Second Street.

This guide begins at Rue Touline and proceeds north. If you begin at Rue Lafayette, follow it in reverse.

From Rue Touline to Rue Trudeau

Begin with the storefronts on your left and the Cane River riverbank on your right.

At Church Street, turn left and walk west. Several businesses have Front Street mailing addresses, but their entrances are located on Church Street.

Planning Tip: On the second Saturday of each month, Rue St. Denis closes to vehicle traffic for Shop St. Denis, a pedestrian-friendly event featuring local shopping, visiting vendors, food trucks and live music. Rue Second Street is a short detour from Front Street and is particularly convenient for guests staying at Andrew Morris House and Judge Porter House.

Public restrooms: Restrooms are located immediately to the right of Patio Cantina on the riverbank. Additional restrooms are available along the Rue Beauport riverbank loop.

Shopping Beyond the Historic District

Downtown contains the largest concentration of locally owned shops, but it is not the only place to find distinctive regional products.

Natchitoches Pecans at Little Eva Plantation: Located in Cloutierville, approximately 25 miles south of Natchitoches. The shop offers pecans, pecan candies, Louisiana food products and gifts.

This is a drive-to destination rather than part of the Historic District walking route. It can be combined with a longer outing through the Cane River area.

Plan Your Shopping Day

Historic downtown Natchitoches is compact enough to explore on foot but varied enough to fill several hours. Begin at either end of Front Street, visit the shops on Church Street and Rue St. Denis, and allow time for lunch, coffee or something sweet.

Your phone can provide directions from your current location to either end of the route or to an individual business. This guide provides the local information a basic map cannot: the order of the shops, the location of side-street businesses and the food and refreshment stops found along the way.

Store hours and operating days can vary, particularly on Sundays, Mondays and holidays. Check directly with any must-visit business before setting out.
