There is a moment in Natchitoches when fall festival season gives way to Christmas. In October, classic cars fill downtown, music carries across campus, and Cane River communities share their food, art, and traditions. By late November, the riverbank is glowing and the 100th Natchitoches Christmas season is underway.
An October weekend and a November weekend may take you to the same historic streets, but they will feel like two different trips.
An October worth exploring beyond Front Street 🎶
October opens with Shakespeare on the NSU stage and classic cars downtown. The Natchitoches Classic Car Show runs October 2–3. The following weekend brings Truvy’s Blush & Bashful celebration of Dolly Parton, the St. Augustine Creole & Family Festival, and the Melrose Arts & Crafts Festival—a chance to enjoy both downtown and Cane River country.
Top of the Boot Music Festival follows October 16–17, alongside an NSU home football game. Homecoming arrives October 24. At month’s end, Pumpkin Glow lights the riverbank, A New Brain opens at NSU, and bands gather for Classic on the Cane on October 31. Dark Woods adds a nighttime option on select October dates.

November moves from game days to Christmas lights ✨
The CASA Superhero Run starts November 7 on the downtown riverbank, and NSU hosts home football games November 7 and 14. Then downtown changes for Christmas. Turn on the Holidays begins the 100th season November 21 with the lighting countdown, a drone show, and fireworks over Cane River Lake. On November 28, the Fleur de Lis Christmas Craft Market fills the Event Center before another evening drone show and fireworks.
Bring a piece of Natchitoches home
October’s art weekends need not end when you leave the festival grounds. Downtown, the Natchitoches Art Guild & Gallery features work by local and regional artists, while Plantation Treasures carries Clementine Hunter prints and gifts connected to Cane River culture. Both give you a way to keep exploring the art and history you came to see.
As November turns toward gift giving, Cane River Soap Company offers locally made soaps and skincare, and Cane River Kitchenware has gourmet foods and gifts for cooks. Between an event and an evening on the riverbank, there is time for a meal that fits the day.
